This is the hotel that started it all. Opened in 1946 by visionary mobster Bugsy Siegel, the Flamingo (named after Siegel's moll Virginia Hill, a Hollywood hottie with legs so comely she was nicknamed "Flamingo") started out as a million-dollar oasis for the rich and powerful.
And although the original Flamingo is gone, the hotel that bears its name is just as glamorous. The glittering pink-and-orange neon facade is one of the most famous in Vegas, but the real glamour is hidden behind the room towers. You'll find a lush 15-acre Caribbean landscape complete with pool lagoons, meandering streams, fountains, waterfalls, a rose garden and wildlife in the form of African penguins, Australian black swans and, of course, pink flamingos. Other Vegas wildlife can be found in the hotel's 77,000-sq.-ft. casino. There's a wide variety of games offered in the bright and busy gaming area, including 2,100 slot machines, over 450 table games and a race and sports book. High-stakes players fit right in, as does the casual gamer; the Flamingo is one of the few places that still offers low limits on blackjack tables. Different sections of the hotel have different room configurations due to years of renovating, but most rooms are larger than average and tastefully decorated in rainforest colors -- and of course, a flamingo motif.

With its brilliant pink facade, the Flamingo Las Vegas -- home to Gladys Knight and Vegas' Second City comedy club -- is as colorful as the history behind it. It seems appropriate that the Flamingo Las Vegas is a direct descendant of the hotel where modern Vegas began; even though Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel's original Flamingo is gone, the hotel that bears the name is no less glamorous.

The lush gardens behind the room towers seem removed from Sin City entirely, with live African penguins, Chilean flamingos, Mandarin ducks and Koi fish frolicking in ponds and under three-story waterfalls. A number of tennis courts, swimming pools and a world-class health spa make the Flamingo seem less a casino and more of a full resort.

Entertainment abounds at the Flamingo Las Vegas with a variety of shows including Gladys Knight and Second City. Restaurants cater to tastes ranging from Italian to Chinese, and the Paradise Garden Buffet serves up delicious food in an idyllic setting. It goes without saying that the casino is enormous, with 2,100 slot machines, 71 table games and a giant race and sports book to reward the fortunate.

True to its lineage, the Flamingo Las Vegas is a quintessential Las Vegas experience.
